Lance is a writer and firefighter. His work is featured nationally in Outside, Travel & Leisure, Backpacker, and Orion, where he’s written about the intersection of identity and nature, His lyric essay, Brothers in Arms, is featured in the anthology Earthly Lovealongside Barry Lopez and Pam Houston. Out of Desolation, a personal essay in Hidden Compass, was selected as one of the top 10 stories for their Legacy Issue. Regionally, he’s written for The Seattle Times and Seattle Magazine, produced cover stories for Mountaineer Magazine and The Stranger, which selected his essay Assaulted and Silencedas the Best American Journalism of the year. His writing is found in academic publications, such as University of Montana’s Cutbank, Vanderbilt’s Ameriquests, and in the queer special issue of Parks Stewardship Forum from UC Berkeley. Garland’s civic engagement has been featured with OutServe, Grist, and Outward Bound. He’s received invitationals from international outdoor brand Fjallraven, Tourism British Columbia, and was a featured storyteller on the podcasts Dirtbag Diariesand A Little Green. He was awarded a fellowship at The Banff Center's Mountain Writing Residency in 2023.
